So I saw Avatar in 3D last night. Now, generally, I am a geeky individual. I dig movies like this. Not to mention that James Cameron is responsible for a couple of the coolest fucking science fiction movies to date (namely, Aliens and the entire Terminator series), everyone and their mother was ranting about how awesome 3D was. So here are my thoughts.
In simplest terms, it went a little like this:
Dances With Wolves+Surrogates+3D graphics= Avatar+eye aches+ nausea
What really bothered me though, was the plot. Despite every element in the movie being derivative and cliche, the movie was transparently about the European slaughter of the Native Americans. Except in this version of the movie, the Europeans (and they were VERY European) grow a concience, join the Native Americans, become their leader (?), and defeat the enemy.
I mean, this movie could have saved me a full fucking hour, and just been about a Na’vi tribesman falling in love with the daughter of the cheiftan, then rising up and leading his people against the human threat. But this isn’t a Native American power fantasy about what could have happened if they drove the Europeans out, this is a movie about white guilt about what they did. But they can’t even allow the indiginous people the pleasure of winning on their own, no. They REQUIRE the help of three white scientist nerds dressed up as natives.
If only some self rightous Pilgrims abandoned their culture, joined the natives, taught them how to unite, and led a grand rebellion against their European overlords. Then EVERYTHING would have been OK, right?
totally agree with toastface on this. The plot was an afterthought and I think you almost should have assumed that going...
youre missing the point the whole plot was just a device to show us wacky creatures fighting the dudes from halo
