I was watching Sci Fi channel the other day when the Star Trek episode “Tapestry” came on. Its a very Picard-centric episode, and we get to glimpse into the young academy years of Jean-Luc. Here’s what happens:
So Jean-Luc gets his shit fucked by a taryon beam that hits him in the heart and kills him. You see, he has an artificial electronic heart, and it blows the fuck up when this happens. All the sudden hes with Q (this super arrogant transdimentional being that likes to be a huge pain in the ass) and it turns out he’s dead. Q is being a big dick to him and is all like “you have any regrets about your life”, and Picard was like “no.” It turns out he had a regret. In his youth, he got in a fight with three nausicans (big motherfuckers), gets stabbed in the heart, and has to get an artificial heart. So, Q lets him change that what happened so he wouldn’t be stabbed, so he wouldn’t die. (Shit, theres like, 3/4 the episode left to describe, I’ll go faster, I promise). Long story short, he goes back and changes all sorts of shit, and it turns out he loses both his best friends. Then he realizes if he never got stabbed by the nausicans, he would have never become captain of the Enterprise, and that will not do. So he goes back and changes that shit AGAIN, even though he knows hes gonna die.

See that? Motherfucker is laughing. LAUGHING. With a knife sticking out of him.Anyways, of course, Picard lives, and is still captain of the Enterprise. Later he opines about how Q did him a favor by teaching him not to have regrets.
What I really don’t understand though, was that Picard was like “I don’t have regrets” and Q convinces him to have regrets, only to teach him not to have regrets? What a fuck.
